Accessibility
How we test this site, and how to tell us about a problem.
AlphaWeb builds WordPress sites for schools, government agencies and nonprofits, where accessibility is part of the job. This page explains how we check alphaweb.com and how to report anything that gets in your way.
How we test this site
Our target for this site is WCAG 2.2 Level AA. WCAG 2.2 is the current version of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines published by the W3C.
These are the checks we have run on this site:
- Automated checks: the axe accessibility engine, run against the WCAG 2.1 Level A and AA rules on key pages at phone (393 pixels) and desktop (1440 pixels) widths. The rules cover color contrast, text alternatives for images, form labels and more.
- Main menu by keyboard: the arrow keys open a menu panel and move focus into it, Escape closes the panel and returns focus to its menu button, and tabbing past the panel closes it.
- Blog filter by keyboard: the category filter opens with Enter or Space, reports whether it is open to screen readers, shows a visible focus ring, and still works with JavaScript turned off.
- Layout at five widths: our main pages are checked at 393, 768, 1024, 1280 and 1440 pixels so content fits without sideways scrolling.
- Images and forms: content images carry text alternatives, and form fields have labels, including the date dropdowns on our forms.
Every page also starts with a "Skip to content" link, so keyboard users can move past the menu in one step.
What automated tools miss
Automated scanners catch only part of the issues, which is why we also test by keyboard. Some content on this site comes from other services, such as embedded YouTube videos, and their players follow those services' own accessibility features.
