Shopify for WordPress: A Public Plugin for the Buy Button

Building Shopify's public WordPress plugin: search, select and embed products or collections with the Buy Button, documented for developers.

Shopify gives store owners a hosted platform for selling online. It wanted WordPress site owners to sell their existing Shopify products in minutes, and asked for a plugin anyone could download from WordPress.org and use right away. Brian led the build.

The challenge

The plugin had to be simple for store owners, handle very large catalogs, meet the standards of WordPress.org and GitHub, and give developers a clean base to extend. Shopify specifically wanted a team with a record of releasing public WordPress products.

The approach

Search, select, add

A focused search lets owners of large stores find the exact product they want, then embed it with photo, description and price in a few clicks using the Shopify Buy Button.

Products and collections

Owners can embed single products or whole collections. Each embed shows the product picture, description and price, and uses the Shopify Buy Button so shoppers buy the products that already live in the owner's Shopify store.

Developer friendly

Extensive documentation and an extensible architecture make the plugin a foundation other developers can adjust.

Built to be released

Coding best practices and a careful release process kept the plugin safe and accessible for public use. The plugin was published on WordPress.org as the Shopify eCommerce Plugin, and the screenshots below show its listing in March and December 2016.
