WordCamp US 2023 took place August 24 to 26, 2023, at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center in National Harbor, Maryland. It is the flagship WordPress event in North America, and our founder, Brian Messenlehner, was there, book in hand, for a few days of sessions, hallway conversations and catching up with people he has known in the WordPress community for more than a decade.
The book still travels
Nearly ten years after the first edition and three years after the second, Building Web Apps with WordPress still comes along to WordCamps. Brian and co-author Jason Coleman have heard from many developers who used the book to learn WordPress as an application framework, and WordCamp US is a natural place to meet them in person. Brian had also brought copies to WordCamp US in San Diego the year before.
What we were talking about
At WordCamp US 2023, Brian summed up the services he was there to talk about in his own words: custom app development, WordPress plugin development, platform migrations, API integrations, support and maintenance, and Elasticsearch implementations. That list maps closely to what AlphaWeb does today:
- Custom WordPress development, including plugins and block based themes.
- Mobile apps for WordPress sites through AppPresser, with more than 1,000 apps built on the platform.
- Migrations to WordPress from legacy and proprietary platforms.
- API integrations with CRMs, payment systems, learning platforms and internal tools.
- Hosting, support and maintenance, including hosting for government and HIPAA compliant hosting.
- Search at scale with Elasticsearch for large content libraries.
A community event, first
WordCamp US is about the WordPress project as much as any business. The contributor day, the talks from core contributors and the hallway track all feed into where WordPress goes next. For an agency, staying close to that work matters. Changes to the block editor, performance and the REST API show up in client projects within months.
Long time attendee
Brian has attended WordCamp US in several years since it began, including Philadelphia in 2016, and AppPresser was a WordCamp US Digital Sponsor in 2018. Showing up year after year is how we stay current, keep relationships strong and give back to the platform our clients depend on.
