LearnDash Development: Training Platforms and Online Courses on WordPress

We build LearnDash training platforms on WordPress: course design, groups and reporting, WooCommerce sales, BuddyPress cohorts, SSO and mobile learning apps.

LearnDash is the learning management plugin I reach for most often when an organization needs to train people on WordPress. It keeps courses, learner data and your brand inside your own site instead of someone else's product. This post covers what LearnDash is, how we build with it and the projects behind that experience.

What is LearnDash? LearnDash is a learning management plugin that runs courses inside your own WordPress site. Courses, lessons, quizzes and certificates are regular WordPress content, and learner records stay in your own database.

What LearnDash is

LearnDash is a learning management system that runs as a plugin inside WordPress. Courses, lessons, topics and quizzes are WordPress content, so your team edits them with the same block editor they already use for pages and posts.

Learner records live in your own database, and every integration WordPress supports is available to your training program. For organizations that already run WordPress for marketing or member content, the course catalog becomes one more section of a site people already know, instead of a second system with duplicate accounts.

How we structure a LearnDash build

Every project starts with the learning model. Before we touch a theme file we map out:

  • Who the learners are, and whether they sign up, are enrolled by a manager or arrive from a purchase
  • How content is organized: single courses, bundles, learning paths or certification tracks
  • What proves completion: quizzes, assignments, time on lesson, instructor sign off or certificates
  • Who needs reporting, and what they need to see without exporting a spreadsheet

LearnDash Groups usually carry the structure. A school district can map groups to buildings, a franchise to locations and a company to departments, so group leaders see progress for their own people only.

Selling courses with WooCommerce

When training is a product, we connect LearnDash to WooCommerce. Course sales get coupons, tax handling, subscriptions and payment gateways your finance team already trusts. A purchase enrolls the learner automatically, and a canceled subscription removes access without anyone editing a user account by hand.

For organizations that sell seats in bulk, we build group purchase flows where a manager buys a set number of seats and invites their team.

Community and gamification

Learning sticks better when learners can talk to each other. Pairing LearnDash with BuddyPress turns a course into a cohort, with discussion next to the lesson. Points and badges through GamiPress or BadgeOS give learners clear goals. We keep these optional and scoped, because a community needs moderation and a plan, not just a feature switch.

Real learning projects

Diversify STEM

An app and website for the Ontario Society of Professional Engineers that advance women in STEM careers. Members sign in with their existing credentials through single sign on with the MPower CRM, and LearnDash lessons award stars and points through GamiPress.

Starbucks barista learning platform

A WordPress learning system that teaches baristas new drinks and equipment. Learners need 80 percent on quizzes to advance, managers are alerted after a fourth attempt below that mark, and dashboards report results by person, store or city.

National Park Service Common Learning Portal

A Learning Center for online, in person and partner training, with links into DOILearn, built to conform to Section 508 and WCAG 2.0.

Mobile learning apps

Learners increasingly study on their phones. A LearnDash site can power native iOS and Android apps with course progress, lessons and login in one place. ConnectedPE is one example: an app that delivers physical education lessons, educator chat and course progress to teachers on the go.

Performance and accessibility

Course sites are mostly logged in traffic, so we plan for object caching, lean quiz queries and video hosting that does not slow the page. Training often has legal accessibility requirements, so we build to WCAG and test keyboard and screen reader use on lessons and quizzes.

Frequently asked questions

Why LearnDash instead of a hosted course platform?

A hosted platform is quick to start, but your content and learner data live in someone else's product. LearnDash keeps both in your own WordPress site and works with every WordPress integration.

Can LearnDash sell courses?

Yes. LearnDash connects to WooCommerce for one time purchases, subscriptions, coupons and bulk seat purchases.

Can learners use our existing login?

Yes. We have connected LearnDash sites to outside identity systems, such as a member CRM for the Ontario Society of Professional Engineers.

Can managers see their own team's progress?

Yes. LearnDash Groups let group leaders see progress for their own learners only, and we add custom reports where the defaults are not enough.

Can a LearnDash site become a mobile app?

Yes. Course progress, lessons and login can run in native iOS and Android apps powered by the same WordPress site.
