Diversify STEM: the mission
The Ontario Society of Professional Engineers (OSPE) is a nonprofit based in Toronto that advocates on important society and engineering issues on behalf of engineers and engineering graduates in Ontario, Canada. We worked closely with the OSPE team to develop DiversifySTEM, a microlearning website and app for its Breaking Barriers initiative to help advance women in STEM programs and careers.
DiversifySTEM was built for STEM employers who want practical tips on attracting and retaining women in STEM careers. Its micro lessons promote gender diversity in STEM workplaces, and they are flexible, action oriented and easy for WordPress administrators to manage. The website and the iOS and Android apps all run from the same WordPress install.
LearnDash, GamiPress and SSO features
- SSO with MPower Technologies CRM
- GamiPress gamification tied to LearnDash lessons
- BuddyPress member profiles via REST API
- Star ratings, feedback and bbPress discussions on every lesson
- Genesis child theme
- WP Engine hosting
LearnDash micro lessons in the app
Using the LearnDash REST API, the app pulls course and lesson data directly from the site and organizes each micro lesson into interactive cards. Users move through lessons, favorite any card and share it on social media. At the end of each lesson they can leave a star rating and feedback, and join a bbPress discussion about it.
GamiPress stars and points
Every time an app user completes a LearnDash lesson, GamiPress awards a star and a predefined number of points. The GamiPress Leaderboards add-on gives administrators insight into who is completing what within the app and who has the most points.
Single sign on with MPower
OSPE uses a third party CRM from MPower Technologies. We worked with the MPower API so existing OSPE members sign in to both the website and the apps with their OSPE Membership credentials.
BuddyPress, Genesis and WP Engine
BuddyPress member profiles reach the app through the BuddyPress REST API, so profile information is managed in WordPress while the app provides its own interface. The desktop and mobile website uses a custom child theme on the Genesis framework by StudioPress. We recommended WP Engine hosting for speed, availability and support, with caching and a CDN.
