All Stars Connected: the mission
The All Stars Project is a national nonprofit founded in 1981 in New York City. It helps inner city youth and their families create success in their lives by using the developmental power of performance, in partnership with caring adults.
Its Development School for Youth (DSY) trains young people ages 16 to 21 to perform as professionals and partners them with business leaders who provide paid summer internships at their companies. DSY partners have included JP Morgan Chase, Investors Bank, American International Group, PSEG, Viacom and MetLife.
We built a mobile app for DSY alumni and a WordPress site where app administrators and partner sponsors post and manage new job opportunities. Admins and partners can also search for alumni who match the preferences of a specific opportunity.
Alumni app and job board features
- Segmented push notifications by location and job type
- WP Job Manager integration, resume CPT driving profiles
- Alumni search for partners
- Custom iOS and Android apps for DSY alumni
- WP Engine hosting
How segmented push notifications work
When a DSY partner posts a new opportunity, alumni who have the Connected Community app on their iOS or Android device get a push notification if their alert preferences match the listing. Preferences cover location and job type. An alumnus who sets New York City as the location and Internship as the job type, for example, is notified when a sponsor posts a new internship in NYC, and can then go apply.
WP Job Manager and the REST API
We worked with and extended the WP Job Manager plugin so it integrates with the custom built apps. Job listings appear in the app based on the types of jobs each alumnus is interested in. The WP Job Manager resume custom post type and the WordPress REST API drive the app profile fields, so alumni build their resume as they fill out their member profile.
The Connected Community website and app are both powered by WordPress and hosted on WP Engine, a managed WordPress hosting platform.
Results at Learning from Leaders
On Wednesday, December 4th, more than 300 business leaders gathered at the annual Learning from Leaders Luncheon to celebrate and raise support for the Development School for Youth. The WordPress powered app was showcased at the event during the lunch.
