Affiliate Summit Europe 2018: Talking WordPress in London

In February 2018 Brian Messenlehner spoke about WordPress at Affiliate Summit Europe in London and met publishers about mobile apps powered by WordPress.

Affiliate Summit Europe 2018: Talking WordPress in London

Affiliate Summit Europe 2018 ran February 6 and 7, 2018, at the InterContinental London, The O2. Our founder, Brian Messenlehner, made the trip to speak about WordPress, and summed it up afterward simply: it was fun speaking about WordPress in London.

Bringing WordPress to a European affiliate crowd

The European affiliate market looks different from the US one. Publishers often serve several countries and languages from one brand, regulations vary by market, and many teams run lean. WordPress fits that world well. It handles multilingual content through plugins like WPML and Polylang, it can run many country sites from one Multisite network, and it does not lock a publisher into one vendor.

Brian's talks at Affiliate Summit events focused on what WordPress can do beyond a basic blog, and London was no different: building the bigger systems affiliate publishers need, keeping them fast, and automating the repetitive work.

Apps for publishers

The trip also had a second purpose. Before the show, Brian invited publishers and affiliates to meet with him about AppPresser, the WordPress mobile app platform, for mobile apps powered by WordPress for their business, their clients and their affiliates. For a publisher, an app adds something a website cannot: a spot on the home screen and push notifications that bring readers back without depending on search or social algorithms.

Localization lessons

Conversations in London reinforced something we now build into every international project. A site that serves multiple countries needs more than translated text:

  • Separate URLs per language with correct hreflang tags for search engines.
  • Currency, date and number formats that match each market.
  • Content workflows so local teams can update their own language.
  • Right to left support where needed, and fonts that cover every script.

That is why Website Localization is now a dedicated AlphaWeb service, with most of our localization work built on WordPress.

Part of a series

London was part of a run of Affiliate Summit sessions for Brian, from Affiliate Summit West 2017 through the closing keynote at Affiliate Summit East 2018 and Affiliate Summit West 2019. Each one pushed the same message: WordPress can do far more than most publishers ask of it.

If you run a publishing or affiliate business across borders, AlphaWeb can help you build a WordPress platform and app that works in every market you serve.
