TIME Healthland and Techland: the brief

Health stories were scattered across TIME.com. TIME wanted a dedicated health destination, and soon after, a home for its tech and pop culture coverage.

Healthland, the revamped health section of TIME.com, launched on September 13, 2010. Instead of hunting through the whole site, readers found all of TIME's health articles in one well organized location and could sort them by a list of commonly used topics. By its first birthday, TIME reported nearly 3,000 posts on Healthland.

Two WordPress.com VIP publishing builds

  • Healthland. One organized home for every TIME health story, sortable by popular topics.
  • Techland. A blog for technology, games, comics and film.
  • Both hosted on WordPress.com VIP.

Techland was one of several TIME.com verticals running on WordPress.com VIP. TIME built these verticals around areas of reader and advertiser interest as mini publications in their own right, and in 2011 TIME.com said its verticals drove 40 percent of total site visits that year.

Why it mattered for TIME readers

TIME readers got focused destinations, and the work opened the door to more enterprise publishing projects.
