Carroll Magazine App: Local Stories, Recipes and Events

Carroll Magazine, the lifestyle magazine of Carroll County, Maryland, built its app on the AppPresser platform, bringing stories, recipes, events and local coupons to mobile.

From the coffee table to the phone

Carroll Magazine covers life in Carroll County, Maryland: the people, the restaurants, the causes and the calendar. Readers used to wait for the next print issue. Since March 2018 they have had an iPhone and iPad app that turns the magazine into a guide they can use any day of the week. The magazine and KōHN Creative built the app with AppPresser's app builder.

The magazine and its publisher

The magazine is based in Westminster, Maryland. Print issues come out every other month, and the website publishes daily. Brothers Matt and Josh Kohn own the publisher, KōHN Creative, which began as a design and print shop before adding web development and digital marketing. Over the years the team has also produced a newcomers guide and a quarterly business publication.

Five reasons readers open it

  • Local features. Profiles of neighbors, places and community causes, with big photos, just like the printed pages.
  • Recipes. A growing set of dishes, each with photos and step by step instructions that are handy in the kitchen.
  • Restaurants and events. A dining guide, an events calendar where readers can add their own listings, and coupons from local shops.
  • Faces and Places. Event photo galleries, long a favorite in print, where people look for friends and neighbors.
  • iPad reading. On a tablet the layout feels close to turning magazine pages.

Who benefits

Longtime residents stay current between issues. People who just moved to the county find places to eat and things to do. Local businesses reach customers through coupons and ads.

Behind the scenes

The magazine's WordPress site uses the JNews theme, Elementor, Interactive 3D FlipBook for digital editions, Modern Events Calendar and Popup Maker. The magazine and KōHN Creative built the app on AppPresser, so stories and events posted on the website appear in the app with no second workflow.

On a tablet, a recipe reads much like a printed magazine page.

More than a digital replica

Adding recipes, coupons and a community calendar is what makes this app useful between issues. Regional publishers can borrow that idea directly.
