How the OpenAI API Works

Your system sends a request to the OpenAI API with an API key, a model name and a prompt, and the model sends back a response. We store the key on your server, never in the browser or the app, and we choose the model that fits the task and the budget.

Text, Reasoning and Structured Output

The Responses API handles chat, writing, summaries and reasoning. Responses can stream word by word, and structured output returns data your code can read without guesswork.

Tools and Function Calling

The model can ask your system to look something up or take a step, such as checking an order or searching your site. Your code runs the step and sends the result back.

Images, Speech and Embeddings

The same platform covers image generation, speech, transcription and embeddings for search over your own content. OpenAI also offers a computer use tool for building agents that operate apps and websites.

Can you use our existing OpenAI account?

Can we also use Microsoft Azure for OpenAI models?

Yes. Microsoft offers OpenAI models through Azure in Microsoft Foundry, and we can build on that route if your organization is standardized on Microsoft.
