How the Claude API Works

Your system sends messages to the Claude API with an API key and gets Claude's response back. We keep the key on your server and pick the Claude model that fits the task and budget.

Messages, Streaming and Long Documents

Claude handles chat, writing and analysis, streams responses as they are written, and works with long documents and uploaded files through the Files API.

Tool Use

Claude can call tools you define, such as a site search or a database lookup. Your code runs the tool and returns the result, so Claude answers from real data.

Computer Use, Skills and Hosted Options

The Claude API includes computer use and browser use tools for agents that operate apps and websites, plus Agent Skills. The same models are also available through Amazon Bedrock and Google Cloud.

Is Claude the same as Claude Cowork and Claude Code?

They use the same Claude models. The Claude API is for building Claude into your own systems. Claude Cowork and Claude Code are Anthropic's ready made agent apps for knowledge work and coding.

Can we use Claude through AWS or Google Cloud?

Yes. Claude models are also available through Amazon Bedrock and Google Cloud, so we can build inside the cloud you already use.
